About EnglishGate

Guidance from someone who knows how English is taught.

EnglishGate was founded by Eyyüp Yaprak, who holds a BA and an MA in English Language Teaching and has 10 years of teaching experience. Since 2014 he has taught learners of every age, from young learners to adults, at every level from A1 to C2, in both general English and exam preparation courses.

He began as an EFL teacher in Turkey, teaching in a state school and private students. After moving to the UK in January 2020, he worked as a tutor and translator in Liverpool and taught English online. He knows what learners need and what good teaching looks like, and he explains every option clearly, in English or Turkish.

Eyyüp is also the founder and Principal Immigration Adviser at ENS Immigration Advice, an IAA-registered firm. If your study plans involve a visa, you can get regulated immigration advice there from someone who already knows your plans.

Teacher’s checklist

10 questions to ask before booking an English course in the UK

Use this list with any school, whether or not you book through us. Good schools will be happy to answer every question.

  1. 1

    Is the school accredited?

Look for Accreditation UK (British Council) or a similar recognised inspection scheme.

  2. 2

What is the maximum class size?

Smaller classes mean more speaking time. Ask for the maximum, not the average.

  3. 3

    How qualified are the teachers?

Ask whether teachers hold CELTA, DELTA or a degree in English language teaching.

  4. 4

How many lesson hours do I really get?

Check the number of lessons per week and whether each lesson is 45 or 60 minutes.

  5. 5

Is there a level test on the first day?

And can you change class quickly if the level is not right for you?

  6. 6

What is the nationality mix at my dates?

A good mix means you speak more English, in class and outside it.

  7. 7

What exactly is included in the price?

Registration, materials, exam fees, accommodation placement and airport transfers are often extra.

  8. 8

How far is the accommodation from the school?

Ask about travel time and the weekly cost of public transport.

  9. 9

What is the cancellation and refund policy?

Read it before you pay, especially if your plans or visa are not yet confirmed.

  10. 10

Will I get a certificate or progress report?

A clear report helps you show your progress to employers or universities.
